I want to begin this with a big sigh.
Now I just use that title, because I knew that it would get your attention. My original title is “What’s In Your Heart?”. You can choice which one you like more.
Now I was hoping that we didn’t get to this point, but in the back of my mind I had a feeling that we would see what I call “the reluctant racist” express themselves in their own words.
Before I even start this I will say again that anyone can be a racist. The oxymoron of the essence of racism is that it doesn’t care who uses it. It’s not solely owned by any one particular group. Racist come in all colors, ages, gender, beliefs, sizes, classes, regions and even political affiliations. It’s derived from multiple areas of life, but to offer a single source of it other than evil; I would say that it comes from a lack of understanding or concern of the targets perspective.
Republican pollster Kelly Ann Conway made a racially charged, shocking comment to CNN’s Larry King and a group of political talking heads.
Kelly Anne Conway:
”John McCain is in New Orleans tonight addressing the Council on National Policy. It’s been reported these are just the cream of the crop conservatives. This is what he’s doing behind the scenes now while Hillary and Obama argue about whether she should let him sit on the back of the bus of her presidential ticket, or he argues whether or not she allowed us to get into the war in 2002.”
If it wasn’t for Democratic Strategist Jamal Simmons rebuttal I believe Larry and the other guests would let it slide.
Jamal Simmons:
“Larry, we have to address that. We have to address that. This ‘back of the bus’ comment is really beyond the pale. I think Senator Clinton, whatever our disagreements are between the two candidates, Senator Clinton has never done or said anything that would imply that she would rather have Barack Obama sit in the back of her campaign bus.”
Of course Conway, a lawyer realized that she was in trouble started to back peddle her way out of serious live chastising by trying to make it seem like she just happened to put her words together and nothing should be misconstrued as racially prejudiced. This is the “I’m not a racist” approach. Normally the first argument used when you’re caught saying something you know is racist or racially charged.
The modern or reluctant racist does not wear a hood. They live a very different, politically correct life with the appearance of a diverse strategy. They pose as supporters of a candidate or cause with genuine, heartfelt passion and logical reasons. Often failing to consider the arguments of the ones they oppose.
Another, but surprising case
In response to a comment by Michelle Obama where she said she was finally a proud American, Charles Lynch, I mean Bill O’Reilly responded with:
“I don’t want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there’s evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that’s how she really feels — that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever — then that’s legit. We’ll track it down.”
What The Hell! I’ll address this one later. There’s so much I want to say about this one, but that’s another topic for another day. Just understand that using these sorts of references is not just poor use of words, or shows a lack of knowledge or concern for the implications in the meaning or history of the words or phrase, but it injects the long legacy of racism in America. Not just towards African Americans, but the genocidal treatment of the Native Americans, the stereotypic images of Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans and the blatant sexism we still deal with today.
Perhaps Jeremiah Wright was attempting to say this, before the media lynching party got him.
Are you beginning to see how this sounds?
One more thing on Bill O’Reilly’s “slip of the tongue”. Although he eventually issued an insincere apology, this I do believe is sincere. I believe he and others who continue to make these “slips” are sincere in what they’re saying. But I ask the question, is there more to these casual slips of the tongue? You say what’s in your heart.
Our Next Contender comes from the Golf Channel. Now I don’t blame the Golf Channel for this one, but question the judgment of Kelly Tilghman for suggesting that golfers should, “lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley.” It reminds me of the “fried chicken comments of Fuzzy Zeller when Tiger won the Masters.
Even someone I’m suspicious of, but give him the benefit of my doubts, Lou Dobbs. Mr. Dobbs objected to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice saying racism was an American “birth defect” by nearly calling her and other Black leaders “cotton pickers.” Now I’m not the biggest fan of Dr. Rice, but understood what she was saying.
Rare Side Note:
I just don’t understand why someone who is obviously posses far more intelligence than most people in the Bush Administration can continue to work with these idiots. You (the Republican Party) has some very intelligent people who could be the Republican version of Barack Obama, but your silence them. Gen. Colin Powell, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Rep. J.C. Watts (OK), Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (VA), Lynn Swan (PA), even going back a few decades with Jack Kemp. With the Real Republicans please stand up. I know it’s rare to hear me offer any type of praise towards Republicans, but if you really want to expand the party, expand your thinking and how you do things. Now that’s all the praise I’m giving you. (I got to go and take a shower now)
Moving to the left
Geraldine Ferraro, the first female major party nominee for the vice-presidency, found herself defending herself from accusations that she was an old cranky bigot. Now I’m not calling her a bigot, but perhaps old and cranky.
Mrs. Ferraro said, “If Obama was a White man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman, he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”
What???
She is entitled to her opinion, which Obama brushed off as “patently absurd.”
Finally, our friends Hillary Clinton and Gov. Mike Huckabee.
The didn’t say anything racist, but the subtle suggestion of the joke by Mike Huckabee during an interview at a NRA event makes you question his judgment. During an interview the sound of a chair hitting the floor sparked a dim-witted joke. “That was Barack Obama ducking under a chair; someone was taking a shot at him”.
Be careful Mike.
Hillary should have known better. Why even mention the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy. It’s easy to see the similarities of the ’68 Campaign of Sen. Kennedy and the ’08 Campaign of Sen. Obama. Why give some fool out there the idea?
In conclusion, this isn’t about the ability to move on, beyond race. If you don’t want to be called a racist, stop doing, saying or acting like one. Don’t give anyone a reason or the ability to call you one. If you’re not a comedian or using it in social commentary or even as a historical reference you shouldn’t include this type of language.
Kelly Anne Conway, Bill O’Reilly, Lou Dobbs, Geraldine Ferraro, Mike Huckabee and even Hillary Clinton should already know this. These are polished, well educated individuals. I know this isn’t the end of this, but hopefully this may help someone out there.
You have to think before you speak. More importantly you need to examine what’s in your heart when these types of things arise in your mind or conversations.
I quote one of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. messages in “Unfulfilled Dreams”.
“And we end up having to cry out with Ovid, the Latin poet, “I see and approve the better things of life, but the evil things I do.” We end up having to agree with Plato that the human personality is like a charioteer with two headstrong horses, each wanting to go in different directions. Or sometimes we even have to end up crying out with Saint Augustine as he said in his Confessions, “Lord, make me pure, but not yet.” We end up crying out with the Apostle Paul, “The good that I would I do not: And the evil that I would not, that I do.” Or we end up having to say with Goethe that “there’s enough stuff in me to make both a gentleman and a rogue.” There’s a tension at the heart of human nature. And whenever we set out to dream our dreams and to build our temples, we must be honest enough to recognize it.”
If you are disturbed and appalled by Kelly Anne Conway’s racist tactics, please let CNN know. Racism, particularly on the public airwaves, must not be permitted to occur. Call the CNN comments line at: (404) 827-1500 or click here to e-mail the Larry King Live show and let your voice and disapproval be known.
I’m using a term that is better known in Europe than the United States. I’m sure that I will get some level of an angry response, but it was a safer title than, “I think I hear the Fat Lady singing”.
Anyway, these are the people a politician least wants to see or hear from who takes you to the side to tell you that the party’s over. Normally the elder or high ranking members, family, friends and colleagues, who you trust enough to tell you truth.
With an almost unanimously segments of the media and others anxiously anticipation the end of Hillary Clinton’s campaign to be the Democratic Party’s 2008 presidential nominee, there is a lot of talks about how she will exit from the race. How hard will she and her supporters take it? How bitter will she or they be?
The big question is who will or can tell her that she needs to call it a day?
I admire and can relate to her determination.
No matter how hard I try, I will never be as good as Tiger Woods on the golf course or Michael Jordan on the basketball court. I can continue to try, but it’s not going to happen. Eventually, I have to come to the realization that I can only play the game.
——
PS: I say this with all sincerity. Although I have disagreed with your campaigning tactics, I don’t believe that you would intentially mean any harm towards the Former Attorney General Robert Kennedy. I do not want you or Barack to face the same fate that he was faced 40 years ago. For once, I’m giving you a pass. Although you probably would have not done the same for Obama, but that’s another blog.
Since race isn’t an issue perhaps you are able to provide some answers to the questions I have regarding an issue that continues to be rise during this campaign season by everyone except the “Black guy”.
I know that it’s not the en vogue thing to openly confess or profess to be racist, prejudice or demonstrate a bias you have however; it’s alright to do it in private or amongst individuals that hold the same opinions.
No one wants to address the issues that surrounds race. We just pretend that it doesn’t exist or hope that it just goes away. Some tries to avoid it all together.
There’s nothing wrong with being proud of who you are and the great contributions to society your race has made. By the same measure and enthusiasm you must apply that to the unfavorable contributions too.
During this campaign we have consistently listened to individuals in the media and most the candidates themselves inject race into every aspect of the campaign. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But you must be fair about it. Address the whole issue not just part of the issue. Senator Barack Obama, Senator John Edwards and Governor Bill Richardson are the only politicians who seem to address the whole issue of race with confidence.
We normally see a group of White men on television speaking about race, most of the time addressing single issues and providing little diversity of views. All claiming to be neutral, unbiased and/or making sure they use politically correct language in efforts not to offend anyone.
Upon every half hour leading up and on Election Day we hear some type of message about how Barack Obama is having difficulties with White Working-Class Voters without a college degree. What difference does that make? They are Americans, but let’s go with that scenario for a minute. When this point is raised it offers two questions with it. (1) Is there anything that Senator Obama can say or do, that would make these voters vote for him? (2) Doesn’t that suggest that the voter holds a bias, a prejudice or perhaps racist feelings?
Listen, I’m raising the question.
If you’re a Democrat and you voted for Hillary Clinton, why wouldn’t you vote for Barack Obama if it’s between him and John McCain?
Be honest with yourself. What is it about being Black is so wrong or taboo?
To be fair I’ll ask the same question to Black readers. What is it about being White is so wrong? Let’s go further, what is it about being Hispanic, Asian or any race, religion or culture is so wrong?
The actions and the passed down traditions of a few shouldn’t corrupt the entire group.
For those who claim to be Christian, I ask this of you. In Genesis 1:26, 27 God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Perhaps you may agree with Deuteronomy 10:17. But if the Old Testament isn’t sufficient, maybe Acts 10:34 Peter said, “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons”. Or even Romans 2:11 would work for you. But that’s only if you claim to be a Christian.
It’s interesting that no one has said anything about the difficulties Hillary Clinton is having with Black voters. To provide more emphasis of which segments of that voter block allow me to say, those Working-Class Voters without College Degrees. I could go further, the Middle and Upper-Class Black voters with College Degrees. Why is she having such a hard time with those voters? Is it because of race? Of course, in this case some would say its race. Now if that’s true, how is that different than the Blue-Collar White Voters that Hillary claims as her base now? By-the-way, what ever happened to the love affair between Bill Clinton and Black America? Hey, don’t stone me, I voted for Bill in ’93 & ’96. It’s just a question.
We see the Republicans using racial overtures in almost every ad or interview they’ve put out against Barack Obama. If the Republican Party is the Party of Lincoln that you proudly profess whenever it comes to Black people, but fail to mention the racist activities or lack of concern by other Republicans at all levels past and present, why do you use these tactics?
Now the Democrats don’t get a pass either, because you have been the perpetrators of the same tactics. If it wasn’t for the social consciousness of a few beginning with Kennedy you wouldn’t have the overwhelmingly support for Blacks that you enjoy now, but don’t get complacent and take this for granted.
Just as there are some for example in Kentucky, West Virginia and Indiana that say they would vote for John McCain or not at all if or when Barack Obama is the nominee there are Black, Brown and even the White voters who would do the same.
My question is what does that say about America?
It says that the works of Barack Obama, John Edwards, Bill Richardson and so many others who openly and fully address the issues of race were in vain and the cynics of all races were correct. Perhaps Jeremiah Wright was right. Perhaps John Hagee was right.
Now is the time for change. Today is the day and this is the year. Change is not just a slogan, but a reality that we all must prepare for and embrace. It can’t happen if we continue to blindly follow the piped pipers of division in either political party, of any race, religion or gender.
The longer we continue the pattern we all have walk, the only thing that will change is the conditions from bad to worse and then deplorable.
Do you vote your fears, bias, prejudices and/or anger? Or do you vote your ambitions, dreams and future?
What is the definition of America?
Note: This one is not all that nice, but hopefully it inspires you.
A message to the Republican Party and those individuals who will vote for John McCain.
We (Democrats) know that you’re going to use whatever dirty, unscrupulous, corrupt, immoral and typical unsavory trick in the G.O.P. Handbook against Barack Obama and Democrats in general. We expect that, you’re Republicans. We understand the depths that you will go to either steal an election (Bush v Gore), kill the system of democracy (scare tactics and/or voter intimidation) and just destroy the process itself by any means necessary (pick any election after Kennedy).
We’re living and paying for your so-called leadership in every aspect of our lives today. If you don’t believe me ask one of the people you look down upon and they’ll tell you.
This time we’re coming for you in November.
America and the world continues to endure the burdens you’ve placed on the American people, the complete arrogance of your policies and relationships with other nations and finally the general lack of concern for even the less of these. You have shown by example that you lack the ability or will to practice what you claim the party was based upon.
Current Party leaders fail to listen to the few voices of true wisdom that remain within the GOP for the allure of power. I know that all Republicans are not bad, but the longer you stand in trash the more you will stink. And it’s time for a bath.
Don’t underestimate us or discount what I’m saying as the opinion of one Democrat. We are finished with our disagreement, now we’re coming for you. So tell your talking heads to bark all they want, but in November you’re going to feel our bite.
The one thing you refuse to admit that you’re afraid of is about to happen. So get your Sugar Honey Ice Tea ready now.
Yeah I said it. If you think you can do something about it, let’s take it to the voting booth.
Disclaimer: No Republicans were harmed during the development of this blog. Although my bank account and wallet had quiet a few unkind words for them.
…………………..
Yesterday when I was standing at the gas pump debating if I should cut my right arm off to pay for this gasoline or just give them my first born, I love them both. I made a call to my friends in the Republican Party. I wanted to offer them some advice before they get to the big party in November this year. I remember what they gave me eight years ago.
So my conversation began from where I was standing, at the gas pump. Eight years ago I remember complaining about paying $1.35 for gasoline. I never would image that the cost of a gallon of milk would be less than the cost of a gallon of gasoline at the same store. Speaking of milk, I should question the ground beef and chicken in my cart too since the regulations on the USDA are so lacks now I’m not sure about the cow or chicken anymore.
Well I guess I can’t be too hard on Republicans, since they did give me a $600 tax stimulus check in hopes that I go out and spend it to help stimulate the economy. Come to think about it, that’s a pretty good economic policy right there. Write a check for an amount that I can’t afford and don’t know how I’m going to repay. Maybe China, the mortgage company and the hospital will overlook the bill I owe them. I got to shop for America. Forget the national debt or an economic policy that works, lets just go to the mall. But wait; before we hit the mall I have to stop by the gas station first. Then I need to go by the grocery store. You know I really should just save this money, since I just got laid off of my job. I didn’t mention that my company is moving its headquarters to Mexico. I found out last week when I tried to get into the building, but it was pad locked. This check would really come in handy. I wouldn’t want to get behind on my mortgage and risk being apart of the home foreclosure crisis.
But wait my Republican friends; maybe we just have a break down in our communication. Hold on, that couldn’t be it, because you tap my phone now. So you know what I say, who I am saying it to and when and where I said it. So it couldn’t be that. Well on second thought maybe it is something I said, because you seem to not receive any of my calls in August of 2005. You remember, I was in New Orleans and this big storm came through and destroyed everything up. I tried to call, but didn’t hear anything from you for four entire days. I even got on television asking for your assistance. My family and I even lived on our roof top for days before you arrived. The funny thing about it is that, I’m still paying for it.
You know, we all have someone in our family that always finds a way to screw something up. Whether it is your Uncle Sam or Cousin George. It’s usually one or two people who are left cleaning up after them, never the entire family.
Well my gas tank is almost full now and need to pay up. Before I end this call I want to know why you invited your old military buddies to the party. Now how many times have we told you to leave your friend John at home? He’s in my pockets more than your cousin George. I’m still recovering from the damage that Dick made on your hunting trip. One more incident like that we’re going to get dropped from our health insurance.
I’m beginning to wonder if G.O.P. should stand for Get Out of my Pockets.
Then the call cut off. I forgot that I used the money that I would have paid my phone bill to put gas in my car!
So Whatcha Saying? No I’m not talking about the song by EPMD, “So Whatcha Saying”. I’m asking Mrs. Clinton what she is trying to suggest by her “Hard-working White Americans” comments she made the other day.
The notion of saying that people will vote her only because she is White is ridiculous. Implying that people will vote for her only because she is a Woman is ridiculous, regardless of race. Suggesting that voters over 50 will vote for her only is ridiculous. These arguments made by anyone suggest that the Americans you’re referencing are unsophisticated, uneducated and are easily wooed by the media and/or public opinion. I’ve made the mistake of saying that Republicans wouldn’t vote for a Democrat and vice versa, but I was wrong.
I’m just a hard-working American or to put it how Hillary and some others would put it, a Black Guy. I am the first to say that I’m not an authority on “hard-working White Americans”, nor do I know what it’s like to be White. I can not fathom what being a woman is like and have no desire of finding out. I pray that one day I will experience life past 50, but I’m happy with my 35 years I’ve lived so far. My common bond with these labels is that I’m subject to the same outrageous prices, taxes and disparities as the hard-working White, Latino, Asian and every other hue of America that you can come up with. Of course there are some prejudices that Black Americans face that others do not. But there are prejudices that White, Latino and everyone else or subject to that I as a Black American would not face. I almost don’t want to use this phrase, but it fits, “can’t we all get along”.
When will the day come that you get just as offended by these types of subtle suggestions and publicly speak against them? If you truly revere the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “…be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. …” and not agree because it’s socially expedient then you will speak out on these types of comments.
Just because I’m of a particular racial identity doesn’t mean that anyone of that same identity will or should agree with everything I say about race, nor should I with them. We may have similar experiences, but who says that my best friend can’t be a White Woman or a Black Man. Why can’t I relate to the elderly Latino man living down the street from me or the gay man who always talks about music with me? Why can’t I find an area of ideological agreement with my Republican friends? I have something in common with you and you with me. You may not see it at first, but if we are willing to be open enough to find out what it is we will be better off?
I’m sure that this will come up again, so in efforts to cut this short I’m asking not only Hillary, everyone including myself, “So whatcha saying?” What are you saying either in terms of your verbalizations, gestures and thoughts towards others?
As I referenced before, I’m just a Black guy, but I’m just as hard-working as any other hue found in America and the world.

Since today is Mother’s Day, I wanted to throw out these thought and suggestions for anyone with a mother? In other words, everyone.
To often with holidays, the media and businesses seek ways to make money off of these special days. In an economy that is seriously leaning towards a recession, ridiculous gas prices, people losing their jobs and homes we have to watch how we spend our money.
Regardless of how close or distant your relationship is with your mother or the woman who holds that title in your life, take time to let her know that you love and/or appreciate her.
Sometimes that’s all it takes.
If your relationship is not as it should be with your mother for whatever reason, just try to forgive her. Do it for you. You do not want to carry this burden another day and risk the possibility of one of you dying without resolving these issues. There are some women that shouldn’t be mothers and you can tell by their disfunction as one. Some things are probably impossible to turn back, but again I ask you to do it for yourself.
Free yourself and as a result of this action you may free others.
Ask yourself this question. By holding resentment in my heart for what my mother or I have done to each other, is it worth me standing in judgment for and possibly face eternal damnation? Probably not.
Forgive and let it go. It doesn’t mean that you have to be best friends. Sometimes she doesn’t know how to effectively communicate with you for various unspoken reasons. Initiate the line of communication and be creative. Your gift of time and forgiveness holds more value than any material item you can buy.
Now if your have a good relationship with your mother, wonderful. Let her know how much you appreciate and love her. If you’re able or have the means, spend time with her. Your gift of time is more valuable than any material item you can give her.
If your mother is no longer with you on this side of eternity, please take the time to thank God for your life and the time you had with her. Her memory never leaves you. In honor of your mother, spend time or send a loving or appreciative message to a woman who is like a mother to you. It may be a Great-Aunt or an older cousin or even the nice lady you see every now and then. Your time, admiration and acknowledgment is worth more than any material thing you can buy.
The bottom line is that time and forgiveness doesn’t cost anything but a willing heart and the courage to act.
Finally, I want to wish my mother, wife, sister, mother-in-law, aunts and female friends who are mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day. I Love You All.
Tim
Approximately a month now I have been talking with my 3 year old son about going to see the movie “Speed Racer” when it comes out on May 9th. I talked about how when I was his age back in the mid-70’s I would stop whatever I was doing and run to the TV to watch Speed Racer. I even imitate the sound of the Mach 5 when it jumped. (Sigh – I loved that show.)
Anyway, each day we would see the commercial I would tell him that we was going to go and see the movie.
As May 9th drew closer I hyped it up even more with my son as if I was one of the movies sponsors. I felt that this was more of a father & son movie than a family movie. And was I correct. When we walked into the movie theater we only saw one woman with her son the rest were fathers that looked to be like myself in their mid-30s with their young sons.
We got a good seat and was getting settled to watch the movie, then my son said, “I have to potty”. I’m looking at him thinking, “Son we got a good seat and the movie is about to start, can it wait”, but I quickly gathered our stuff and rushed him to the restroom and rushed back. After about an hour into the movie he whispered to me again, “Daddy I got to go”. I looked at him a bit frustrated and said, “Dude, they’re about to reveal who Racer X is? Can you wait a minute?” He was kind enough to wait exactly a minute, enough time for me to see if Racer X is really his brother Rex or not. I’ve been waiting to know this since the 1st grade. So we rushed out and repeated the same routine as we did a hour ago.
By this time I knew it was nearing the end of the movie. Speed made it through the cross-country race and finally got the invitation to race in the Grand Prix. I leaned over to my son and said, “this is going to be cool”. He replied and said, “Yeah I know”.
Then the race began. Now for a moment, we were the same age. The difference was that he was more interested in the action parts of the movie (how fast the cars were going, the fighting & shooting scenes and the race). I was more interested in the actually story of the movie. I knew what was going to happen in the race.
Anyway, I won’t give it away. I thought it was a good movie. I will absolutely purchase the DVD when it comes out so we can share that moment again and again. I admit that it’s probably geared more towards the boys who watched the cartoon back in the 70’s who are not father’s of young sons of their own.
I know tomorrow is Mother’s Day, but today was Father’s Day for me.

Who are you calling…
May 15, 2008 in Opinion Editorial | Tags: Obama, Offensive Words, Sensitivity, Sweetie Comment | Comments closed
I was reading and listened to a news report that read, “Obama sorry for sweetie comment”.
WTH! This is ridiculous.
How sensitive are we? I can think of many things that I could say that would be offensive to someone than “Sweetie”. Perhaps, I could say what Bush said during his last campaign to a reporter when he whispered to Cheney, “that guy is a major asshole”. What about just using (what we will soon hear more of from the G.O.P. during the General Election, although in somewhat subtle undertones) some derogatory racial or gender characterization.
Using the phrase “Sweetie” is not offensive. I’ve been called a lot of things in my life and in comments on this blog. I’m sure you have been called some terrible things in your life too. The question is what answer to? Evaluate what a person is saying by the context that they are saying it in before getting “up in arms” and offended.
If I was offended by the things that my co-workers, neighbors and even family or friends say, I would be upset all the time.
Regardless of what some may think, I’m not an angry Black man, nor do I think that you’re an angry __________ man or woman. But you wouldn’t know that unless you first evaluate the context of what is being said. Just as I believe you’re doing now by reading this blog.
I guess a better way of putting it is, judge me by the content of my character.
I have more to say, but I’ll save that for later. Thanks for reading Sweetie.
