Question for White Americans Only
May 16, 2008 in Politics, Race Relations | Tags: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, White Americans, Working-Class | 3 comments
I just want to ask a question to readers who are White. I ask only because I’m curious to know what you think about what the underlying meaning of the statement offered primarily by the Media, but not exclusively.
As I was watching and listening to CNN, MSNBC, NPR , podcasts and national radio shows I continue seeing a theme that is suggesting that White Americans can not or will not vote for a candidate of any other race.
In my opinion this is ridiculous. It’s the same question that was posed several months ago towards Blacks and Hispanics. Which is equally ridiculous, because there hasn’t been much diversity in Presidential politics.
Yes, I’m not forgetting the following campaigns:
- 1972 Presidential Campaign by Shirley Chishom
- Mrs. Ferraro in 1980
- Jesse Jackson in 1984 & 1988
- nor will I dismiss the Alan Keys 2000 Campaign
- Carol Mosely-Braun in 2004
- Al Sharpton in 2004
- finally this year with Alan Keys again
- Gov. Bill Richardson
- and the reason for the question in the first place, Barack Obama.
What I believe is ridiculous about this question is that you’re saying that White Americans can not or will not see beyond color when the media continue to suggest that Barack will have difficulties with the “White Americans”.
Similar questions and/or suggestions has been thrown out there against Black, Hispanic and even Gay Americans. One will not vote for the other because of… Come on now. If the same group of people say that race isn’t a factor why does it keep coming up, not only by the Press but in the Exit Polls? Ofcourse I know by personal experience of people of various races that refuse to support the other because of the color of their skin. And I have told each person each time that the same thing, that type of thinking is the root of the problem.
Just to reiterate, the question. I want to know what White Americans think ONLY. I’ll raise the question again to everyone else. But I think it’s more important to hear what White Americans think. I have a question that’s probably more critical for Black Americans later.
The Question — White Americans can not or will not see beyond color when the media continue to suggest that Barack will have difficulties with the “White Americans”?
Do not worry about being mocked or any backlash. I’m honestly just curious in your opinion. I will personally block anyone who sends a comment attacking another. It’s about your opinion to the question, not towards anyone else.
