There’s an old expression? “If you want to hide something from a Black person, put it in a book.” Surprisingly, I’ve actually been told only twice in my life, once as a joke and the other I believe was serious this expression. The person who was joking was a former friend of a friend who was White and got too comfortable and said this to me. I didn’t have to replay, with the exception of telling my friend that he need to let him go and lower his voice. The person who was serious was an ignorant relative who told me this.
There’s long been a stereotype that Black people don’t like to read. The unfortunate fact is that some people, even Black people have accepted this lie as truth. The thinking is that Black folks prefer to rely on oral communication to document history and to communicate, in general. We supposedly don’t like to write and we don’t like to read. The harsh reality is that proving racial discrimination, harassment or retaliation at work requires a worker to become a voracious reader, as well as a person who consistently documents everything happening around them. I have often written about race in addition to many other topics. After a few inquiries about the books I’ve read or am currently reading. I found it to be better to just try to include some of the books I’ve read and recommend and/or books I’m presently working to finish reading.
Books I’m Currently Reading:
- Envy of the World - Ellis Cose
- The Christian Moral Vision (3rd Edition) – Earl H. Brill
Books I’m Interesting in Reading:
There are so many outstanding books out there that continue to inform and inspire me to venture out and make my own literary contribution. So many that I barely have time to read them all. A few that I am interested in reading soon and will suggest to those who has either found themselves on my blog or have followed my blog for awhile.
