The Difference Between Conservative & Liberal

Disclaimer – This is not an attack of either Conservative or Liberal, just a comparison and consideration.

The Idea – This is an effort to understand the differences between conservatives and liberals, not to pit one against the other. To make this comparison you must take the opportunity to sincerely consider both equally and without applying your own understandings of the two. You must take an ideological moratorium to do so if you want a true comprehension of the two.

Once again, this is not to disparage either, but to better understand both. In the end you begin to better understand yourself.

Interpretations – I understand there will be those who may never get it and are bound to be a victim of their reality or perceptions. What is true is revealed through your actions and reactions. When you consider what is said and not said, perceived and misconceived or included or excluded from conversation and behaviors.

People reveal who they are to you all the time. You just have to recognize their introduction. They reveal what they know, what they are afraid of and what they don’t understand in their response, regardless of the way they choose to disguise it.

When you have considered what is being said with a bias or if you are excluding what you were taught into your understanding of the issue, situation or occasion, you can discover what is true.

So let me get to the differences between conservatives and liberals beginning with a question.
What does it means to be a conservative?

I think it would only be fair to see how the dictionary defines a conservative. According to dictionary.com, a non-partisan organization, they define conservative as an adjective.

Con-serv-a-tive (adjective)
Disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.

So why should those who are not conservative being that surprised at the staunched and be suspicious of the opposition being presented by those who self-identify as conservative? Whether it is politically, economically, socially, sexually and even spiritually? This is how they have chosen to be.

When you take a look at what it means to be a conservative, someone who is liberal may ask why? But when you just think about that question alone you learn that just asking that type of question tends to goes against what it means to be conservative, because typically you don’t ask why, it just is.

I believe the definition is slightly inaccurate, because it doesn’t completely define what it means to be a conservative. I would just modify it to say that a conservative is exposed to the perceptions of conditions, traditions, institutions and practices that render them to find comfort with limited or slow change.

What does it mean to be liberal?
Lib-er-al (adjective)
Favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
[Source: Dictionary.com]

So with that being said, why is it a surprise to conservatives that anyone who self-identifies themselves as liberal opposes obstruction to progress? Why should it be a surprise to conservatives that someone who is liberal would support reform over repeal?

It is disingenuous to a degree to believe conservatives can ever understand liberals and liberals ever understand conservatives without both demonstrating consideration of each other. In mathematical terms, a positive and a negative can only equal something less than what you started with.

When I consider both, the liberal and the conservative I come to this conclusion. The conservative finds comfort and/or contentment in stillness. While the liberal finds comfort and/or contentment with movement.

Conclusion
You have free-will and the right to live the lifestyle you desire. That must be extended and realized by everyone, for everyone.

Over the years I have observed and studied the pattern of people who could only respond with name calling, accusations and insinuations launched towards me by individuals who identify them as conservative. They taught me some very interesting lessons about the mind of the conservative in contrast to the mind of a liberal. It is not so much what they think than it is how they think. This is the only way to understand the what and why.

So why should I waste time trying to persuade someone, when I can spend more time emphasizing what is true. If it is true and sincere it speaks to the conscious and bypasses the limitations of the mind.

You may agree or disagree with me, but neither can say in truth that I’m not fair. You may not understand it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

  1. It’s all very simple. The 1930s, ’40s, ’50s, ’60s and ’90s proved that, when liberals win, everybody wins, including conservatives. The 1970s, ’80s and 2000s proved that, when conservatives win, everybody loses, including, eventually, conservatives.
